This month has been very inspiring for me. I have been so grateful for the past two weeks we have had as far as church meetings and tonight for FHE.
For a long time I have struggled with worrying and having anxiety about what other people think and do. I worry that I am too fat or not pretty enough.
Through these past few weeks I have come to learn in a huge way that it really does not matter what others think. What truly matters is how am I getting closer to God.
There have been a few people in my life I have held some grudges against. After weeks and almost months of feeling down and ugly I have realized that I wasn't hurting anyone but myself. The people I was upset at really don't care. People ultimately don't care if you are mad at them. This world is so involved with themselves (in both good ways and some bad ways) that they really don't think twice about your feelings toward them. So really the person you are hurting is yourself.
The more angry, revengeful and hurtful feelings you are feeling are only hurting yourself. The other people really don't care. They have moved on. But you are still feeling ugly and hateful to them. Feelings like those do not produce the spirit therefore degressing you from the presence of God.
This is a principle I have learned not just in how you feel about people who bother you. It's about life in general. When you are so worried about what others are thinking or doing or even what they look like you don't have the time or mental ability to focus on how much YOU are progressing toward God.
If you have the focus on returning to God you will focus on the things that help you progress: service, scripture study, temple attendance, charity, and other Gospel Principles that will bring YOU closer to Heavenly Father.
Now this might sound selfish but in my eyes it is more about Agency. We are all here on a journey. We are all ultimately here to return to Heavenly Father. But we each choose how we will react to our different circumstances. Heavenly Father gives us experiences to see how we will react. Will we choose to react to things to bring us closer to God or farther away? But so and so did this. They broke the rules. So what. They decided to do that. That will be to their progression or degression. But how we react determins our progression or degression. If we choose to get upset because someone cut in line, we are having feelings that stop the spirit.
Of course we are human. But the test is to overcome those natural feelings.
If we mess up that is what the Atonement for. We are to use the Atonement to as a member of my bishopric said to be from bad to good to better. I might add to best.
We are to become who Heavenly Father wants us to be. To overcome natural feelings to be our best selves.
This is just a sample of what I have learned this past month.
